Where, oh where, have my nutrients gone?

Did you know that our body can be shut down just by taking out a couple little ingredients? And we do this to ourselves! Those little ingredients are enzymes. Enzymes are needed for every chemical action and reaction. Metabolic enzymes are the factors that mobilize our organs, tissues and cells. Even hormones, vitamins, and minerals are enzyme dependent to work properly! Enzymes are usually thought of as being a molecule that has a specific function: digesting our food. This is a very limited view of the wonders that enzymes can accomplish. Nutrient breakdown into pieces that are usable by the body (absorption etc) is through enzymes, repairing muscle and bone, detoxification...the list goes on and on. There is not a process in the body that is not enzyme dependent in some aspect or another. Life is impossible without enzymes.
Making sure you are eating good, nutritious food is great, as well as working out and taking vitamins to make up for any nutrient deficiencies. But what happens if you don’t have the proper enzymes? Then you cannot get the nutrients out of your good for you (but useless) food, you will not use all of the vitamins you are taking (some of these usually have some enzymes included in them), and your muscles and bones will not “bounce” back from heavy activity or injury as easily, or as strongly. Enzymes really are the key ingredient to our bodies health.
